Why do algae smell like fish?

The BAC algae are grown in bio reactors away from any fish.  And actually it is not the smell of fish, it is the smell of the sea.  The familiar smell is caused by the molecule dimethylsulfide (DMS), which algae produce in large amounts,. The DMS sulfuric compound is thought to play a major part in cloud formation above the seas, and is also used by various birds and marine animals to navigate.
